Welcome to Rotary International District 7080

Rotary is a non-religious, non-political organization comprised of over 30 thousand service clubs and 1 million member-volunteers throughout the world. We are committed to making a lasting change though humanitarian projects that help people and build stronger communities.

This website is primarily a resource for Rotarians and Rotaractors within District 7080.  That said, there is also plenty of information for people looking to learn more about our organization.  Review the stories below to see what we've been up to lately, or go to www.rotary.org to learn more about Rotary International.

Water First Global Grant

Submitted by The Rotary Club of Guelph

How many times, as Rotarians and Canadians, have we heard the comment; “(We) help with water projects all over the world, why do we still have clean water issues in Canada” and then, “what can we do to assist First Nation people who are dealing with clean water issues?” The how and why of clean water issues in Canada is a complex and deeply frustrating issue for all Canadians and a life-threatening issue to affected Indigenous communities. So, what can we as concerned Canadians and Rotarians do?

After much research and discussion, a group of District 7080 and 7090 Rotary Clubs worked together and applied for a Global Grant to be hosted in Canada, with an International partner in Buffalo and were successful in raising $115,000 to assist in training interested Indigenous youth in clean water management.

Rotarians Focus on Environment
Submitted by Nagwa Abou El-Naga, District 7080 Rotaract Director

DG Michael Lawrie recently launched a new District Committee to help our clubs tackle environmental issues and support Rotary’s newest Area of Focus. Our Environment Committee is currently planning a series of webinars to inform Rotarians about ways our clubs, and club members, can work to protect the environment.

Adapting to Change - RC Brampton Flower City Centennial
The Rotary Club of Brampton Flower City Centennial is a relatively small but active club. The COVID 19 Pandemic affected both of our primary fund-raising events from last years. Notwithstanding our members continues to serve the community. They were able to identify several causes where the club could be of assistance.

Spreading Christmas Cheer - RC Palgrave
These unprecedented times have forced Rotary clubs around the world to reinvent many of their events and fundraising activities. Palgrave Rotary club is proud to have embraced this challenge and successfully developed a fundraiser that replaced income lost to the pandemic, facilitated continued interaction between the club and the community we serve most immediately, and provided a much-needed dose of Christmas cheer!

Four Burlington Rotary Clubs at Christmas
Together, the four clubs in Burlington joined to prepare 800 goody bags full of candy canes, chocolates, a cookie and other sweets ready to add to the Christmas Dinners served on Christmas Day by the Meal Bag Program at Wellington Square United Church.

It has been a tough year: some folk lost their jobs, families lost loved ones, some had health issues and some became more socially isolated than ever.  Many community partners, friends, churches, and organizations, including Rotary, rallied together and did everything they could to deliver a safe ‘pandemic proof’ Christmas dinner and deliver a message of hope to those in such need. The Meal Bag Program at Wellington United Church is so grateful for the Christmassy candy bags provided by the four Burlington Rotary Clubs that gave that special touch, a sweet ending to the Christmas dinner.

Our partners, volunteers and friends who delivered the hot meals heard inspirational stories of gratitude for the meal on Christmas Day. Check out the action on Youtube.

Drive-Thru for Winter Coats - RC Mississauga Meadowvale
On Saturday, January 16th, the Rotary Club of Mississauga-Meadowvale hosted a drive-thru coat drive to collect winter coats for the annual Fight The Cold Coat Drive. Fight The Cold Coat Drive is an initiative led by Mississauga community volunteer Leslie Silvestri. Every year, Leslie collects gently used winter coats for those in need. Due to the pandemic, this year's need is much greater.

RCMM collected over 200 coats in the parking lot of Streetsville United Church. The club would like to thank Streetsville United and all the Rotarians and community members who donated and helped with this event. Your kindness is appreciated.

Blood Donation Challenge

Submitted by The Rotary Club of Cambridge Sunrise

The Rotary Club of Cambridge Sunrise has issued a Blood Donation Challenge to members, their family & friends. Between January 8 – February 14th, people are challenged to go donate blood.

Rotarian Jen Clarke mentions the club has been getting some good traffic and feedback on their social media channels, and members have already started making appointments and donating.

All clubs/district are welcome to join us in this challenge.  Note that this is an essential service, so the donation centres are open – by appointment only. https://www.blood.ca/en
Rising to the Challenge

Past President Mary Brady and President Ralph Sprague, Rotary Burlington North

Our biggest struggle at the beginning of the lock down due to COVID 19, was knowing how to run a meeting virtually. The Zoom application was new to most of us. Luckily, we had a member of our club whose company allowed her to use her account for personal reasons, and she was familiar with the technology. This allowed us to start offering our meeting virtually immediately. We soon realized that it was going to be a while before we were going to meet in person again - little did we know that this was not going to be for just a few months.

February Message - District Governor Mike Lawrie

Welcome to February, our shortest month and we rejoice seeing the daylight stretching a little longer each day. As Canadians, our national identity is partially formed by our four very different seasons and the opportunity to be active outdoors. Winter brings us a chance to engage in alpine and Nordic skiing, snowmobiling, snow shoeing and ski-doing; but this year we had to adjust to the Pandemic rules and do these things differently, if at all. The snowbirds were largely grounded this year and our love for a break in the sunny, warm southern climates was probably curtailed. None the less, as Canadians, we find ways to get fresh air and hopefully to engage with others in newly defined ways.

Why You Should Care About Rotary Branding

By Liz Thiam, Rotary brand specialist

As a Rotary brand specialist, I see Rotary signs everywhere. I guess you could say it’s an occupational hazard. Even my children spot Rotary signs wherever we go. So when I attended a local Rotary event in my hometown last year, I couldn’t help but notice how Rotary’s logo was being used.

What is The Disaster Advisory Resource Group?
IPDG Lesley Barmania, 2020-21 DARG Chair

The Disaster Advisory Resource Group (DARG) was established in the summer of 2020 to communicate, connect and coordinate information from members regarding local and international disaster initiatives.  For clarification, the DARG Committee will not manage projects; their role is to provide information to support our members and clubs.

It all started last year with a request from Betty Jo Parent, Rotary Mississauga West, to find out how our members might provide emergency support to those affected by the disastrous Australian bushfires.  (You can read the full story on our DARG pages.)  Not long after, we were facing a crisis of our own – the COVID-19 pandemic.  And a few weeks later came news of the Beirut explosion.  Emails were flying between Rotarians and clubs who were eager to help, and we quickly realized that we needed some way to coordinate our efforts.  But where to start?

February Message - RI President Holger Knaack
In Rotary, 23 February is our anniversary, and February is also the month when we focus on promoting peace. There is a reason for this: Contributing to peace and international understanding has been a high priority for us since our earliest days.

We are often asked: “How can we get involved in peace now?” There are many paths to peace in Rotary. Our youth programs point us in the direction of Positive Peace, as does the work of intercountry committees and the Rotary Action Group for Peace.

Rotary 7080 Youth Exchange
Dean Rutty, Youth Exchange Committee Chair, 2019-2021

As you all know, our District Youth Exchange Program is currently suspended. Our District Committee recently met via Zoom with our 8 anxious yet patient outbounds (the group that would have been abroad right now had it not been for the pandemic), and they, as are we, cautiously optimistic that the program can resume for 2021-22. Obviously many factors have to fall into place, including vaccine accessibility, resumption of safe air travel, ability to live with host families and attend school, and granting of visas. It is too early to tell if this will be the case.

I ask you to keep in mind that former Exchange students make exceptional speakers for your weekly Rotary club meetings. They not only provide a glimpse of life in another country, they offer tremendous insight into how Youth Exchange benefits communities and Rotary clubs. Zoom also makes it easy for your club to have a “reunion” of past Exchange students- how exciting to find out how their lives have changed since their Exchange!

Please email me and we will be pleased to arrange a wonderful speaker for your meeting.

2019-2020 Awards and Citations
As Rotarians, we belong to Rotary for the satisfaction of knowing that we are contributing in our own way to make our community and our world a better place. Service above Self. However as District, it is important to recognize and celebrate the many significant contributions that are quietly and selflessly being made by dedicated Rotarians and Rotary Partners, and to recognize clubs which strive to build their membership and strengthen the communities they are part of. The District 7080 Awards are one way of recognizing those contributions and accomplishments.
